Rabi 2026 Crop Planning — October to March Guide
Rabi is the cool season — calm compared to Kharif’s monsoon rush. The rains are done, the air is clear, and the crops you plant now will carry your income through the lean summer months. For Karnataka and Deccan plateau farmers, Rabi 2026 runs from October through March. Let us walk through it month by month.
October — Land Prep and First Sowing
As soon as the Kharif harvest is cleared, give your field one deep tillage pass to break the surface crust and let air in. If you have compost ready, now is the time to spread it — 2 tonnes per acre, worked into the top 6 inches.
By October 15–20, the soil temperature drops enough for wheat in northern Karnataka and higher-altitude areas. Sow at 40–45 kg/acre in rows 22 cm apart. In the Deccan plateau districts, chickpea (Bengal gram) is king — sow at 30–35 kg/acre. Mustard can go in by October end in drier zones.
Farmer's Tip
November — Spices and Vegetables Come In
November is when the kitchen garden crops take centre stage. Onion transplants go in — start seedlings in September nursery beds, transplant at 30-day-old seedlings into ridges 15 cm apart. Garlic cloves are planted in October-end; by November you should see green shoots emerging.
Coriander and fenugreek are direct-sown in November in lines. Both germinate quickly in cool soil. These are high-value crops per square metre, and with a direct consumer channel they fetch 3–5× mandi price.
For seed sources, contact your nearest KVK (Krishi Vigyan Kendra) for certified organic or desi variety seeds. Desi varieties perform better under low-input conditions — they have been selected over centuries for the local soil.
3–5×
price premium for coriander and fenugreek sold directly to urban consumers vs. mandi price
December — Water Discipline for Wheat
Wheat has five critical irrigation windows. The most important: Crown Root Initiation (CRI) stage at 21 days after sowing — do not miss this one. After CRI, irrigate at tillering (40 days), jointing (60 days), heading (80 days), and grain fill (100 days). Five irrigations, done right, on a 200-litre drip-per-hour system, use less water than two flood irrigations.
December is also the time for first weeding in chickpea. Hand-weed at 25–30 days after sowing. Chickpea does not compete well with weeds early; one clean weeding doubles the final yield.
Apply jeevamrutha at the base of wheat rows — 200 litres/acre — in the first fortnight of December. The cool soil biology responds slowly but steadily to each application.
January — Flowering Stage, Frost Watch
Chickpea flowers in January. This is the most sensitive time — frost kills the flower and destroys the pod set. In frost-prone areas (parts of Bijapur, Gulbarga, Raichur), protect with a light evening irrigation the night before a predicted frost — wet soil radiates more heat than dry.
For wheat, January means the crop is in jointing stage. Watch for yellow rust — orange-yellow pustules on leaves. If you see them, spray 0.5% potassium silicate solution (50g in 10 litres of water) on the leaves. It strengthens the leaf cuticle and slows spread.
Farmer's Tip
February — Grain Fill and Bird Deterrents
Wheat grain is filling in February. Birds — especially sparrows and parakeets — can take 5–8% of a wheat crop if left unmanaged. Hang old CDs on strings, use reflective tape, or position a scarecrow every 30 metres. Children from the family are the best bird chasers — a tradition that also keeps them connected to the farm.
Continue jeevamrutha application every 15 days. By now the soil biology should be clearly visible — earthworm castings on the surface, good crumb structure in the topsoil.
March — Harvest and Store Before the Heat
Chickpea and mustard are ready in early March. Harvest chickpea when 80% of pods are straw-coloured. Thresh by beating sheaves on a clean tarpaulin — a traditional method that works well for small farms. Dry to 10–12% moisture and store in airtight containers with neem leaves.
Mustard is ready when 75% of siliques (seed pods) are yellow-brown. Harvest early morning to prevent pod shattering. Press within 2 weeks for best oil quality.
By mid-March, start planning Kharif 2026. The cycle continues, and the farmer who plans in March wins in October.
