ONDC for Organic Farmers — Sell Online Without Middlemen

ONDC — the Open Network for Digital Commerce — is the Indian government’s answer to platform monopolies in e-commerce. Instead of one company owning both sellers and buyers (as Amazon and Flipkart do), ONDC is an open protocol: any seller app and any buyer app can connect through the same network. For organic farmers, it offers an online sales channel with dramatically lower commissions and no lock-in.

How ONDC Works

ONDC is not an app you download — it is an infrastructure layer. You list your products on a Seller Network Participant (SNP) app that is connected to ONDC. Buyers find your products through any Buyer App connected to the same network — Paytm, Magicpin, Craftsvilla, or any of the growing list of ONDC buyer apps. You do not need accounts on all of them. List once, be discoverable everywhere on the network.

Who Can Join

To sell food products on ONDC, you need an FSSAI registration or licence. This is the same requirement as selling packaged food anywhere in India. If you have FSSAI, you can join. Fresh produce with no packaging or minimal packaging has different requirements — check with your chosen network participant for their specific onboarding rules, as some SNPs handle fresh produce and some do not.

Step-by-Step: Joining ONDC as a Seller

Step 1 — Find a Seller Network Participant. Go to ondc.org and look at the list of registered network participants. Choose one that supports food sellers. Currently active SNPs for food include SellerApp, Bizdirect, and several regional apps. The list grows monthly.

Step 2 — Complete onboarding. Each SNP has its own sign-up process. You will need your FSSAI number, GST number (if applicable), bank account, and a product catalogue with photos, descriptions, weights, and prices.

Step 3 — Upload your catalogue. List each product with a clear photo, accurate weight, price, and your FSSAI number. Be precise about shelf life — incorrect expiry dates are the most common reason for account suspension.

Step 4 — Set your delivery radius. ONDC supports hyperlocal delivery. Define the PIN codes or city zones where you can deliver. Be conservative initially — it is better to deliver reliably in a small radius than to overpromise and underdeliver across a city.

Farmer's Tip

What Sells Well on ONDC

ONDC currently works best for products with reasonable shelf life: turmeric powder, spice mixes, organic rice, cold-pressed oils, dried pulses, and herbal products. These can be pre-packed, photographed, priced, and shipped with standard logistics. Fresh vegetables are harder due to short shelf life and the need for cold-chain logistics that most SNPs do not yet handle well.

Current Limitations

Order volume on ONDC is still significantly lower than on Amazon or Flipkart. As of early 2026, ONDC is a growing channel, not a replacement for established platforms. Use it as a supplementary channel alongside WhatsApp direct sales. The infrastructure and buyer awareness are improving quickly — getting your catalogue listed now means you benefit as the network scales.
