Cabbage Farming in India — Organic Guide
Cabbage is a high-yielding Rabi season crop in Karnataka — planted October–November and harvested January–March — producing 15–25 tonnes/acre in 70–90 days from transplanting with organic net income of ₹50,000–90,000/acre, and carrying a strong premium at organic markets where residue-free heads are prized by health-conscious consumers aware that conventional cabbage carries heavy pesticide loads. The crop’s organic challenge is entirely centred on caterpillar management: diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella) and cabbage butterfly (Pieris brassicae) can devastate a crop within 2 weeks if not managed with a disciplined Bt rotation. The good news: Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) is specific to these caterpillars, highly effective in organic certification, and inexpensive at ₹200–300/kg.
15–25 tonnes/acre
Organic yield range; compact early hybrids at lower end; large late hybrids at upper end; soil preparation quality directly determines head size and uniformity
70–90 days
Days from transplanting to harvest; nursery phase adds 25–30 days before transplanting; total duration from seed to harvest is approximately 100–120 days
₹50,000–90,000
Net income per acre for organic cabbage; peak January–February prices can push returns higher; avoid sowing for March–April harvest when glut depresses prices
15–25°C
Optimal temperature range; cabbage is cool-season crop; in Karnataka it is grown in the cooler Rabi season (Oct–March); high plains districts like Chikkamagalur and Hassan are best suited
Which Cabbage Varieties Perform Best Organically in Karnataka?
| Variety | Type | Days to maturity | Head weight | Yield (t/acre) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Green Express | Hybrid | 65–70 | 1.2–1.5 kg | 18–22 | Early variety; compact heads; suits October planting for December harvest before glut |
| Pride of India | OPV | 80–90 | 1.5–2 kg | 16–20 | Open-pollinated; save seed; good local market acceptance; strong flavour |
| Golden Acre | OPV | 70–80 | 1–1.5 kg | 15–18 | Classic variety; widely adapted across Karnataka; reliable germination |
| Hari Raja | Hybrid | 75–80 | 1.5–2 kg | 20–25 | Good for Mandya, Hassan, Chikkamagalur conditions; tight, dense heads |
| Red Acre (red cabbage) | OPV | 80–90 | 800g–1.2 kg | 10–14 | Niche but ₹30–50/kg at urban specialty stores and salad restaurants; low competition |

Nursery preparation:
- Raise seedlings in shade net nursery in pro-tray (98-cell) or on raised nursery beds
- Nursery soil mix: 1 part garden soil + 1 part vermicompost + 1 part sand; sterilise with boiling water or Trichoderma drench
- Sow seeds at 0.5 cm depth; water gently; germination in 5–7 days
- Treat seedlings with Pseudomonas fluorescens drench (10g/10L) at 10 days and 20 days
- Transplant ready at 25–30 days when seedlings have 4–5 true leaves and are 15 cm tall
Field preparation:
- Deep plough to 25 cm; expose to sun for 10–15 days
- Apply 5 tonnes/acre composted FYM + 2 tonnes vermicompost; incorporate thoroughly
- Neem cake: 500 kg/acre — provides nitrogen + suppresses root knot nematodes
- Trichoderma harzianum: 2.5 kg/acre in 200 kg compost — broadcast and incorporate
- Form raised beds (15 cm high) with flat tops; bed width 1 m for easy access from both sides
- Transplanting spacing: 45 cm × 45 cm; apply Jeevamrutha drench to beds 3 days before transplanting
How Do You Manage Pests in Organic Cabbage — Especially Caterpillars?
Caterpillar management is the make-or-break factor for organic cabbage profitability.
Diamondback moth (DBM) and cabbage butterfly:
- DBM larvae feed inside the head in late stages — by the time head damage is visible, larvae are deep inside and spraying is ineffective; prevention is critical
- Bt spray regimen: Begin Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki) sprays at 7-day intervals from day 15 after transplanting — before caterpillars are visible; Bt only works on young larvae
- Pheromone traps: Install DBM pheromone traps at 4–6 per acre from day 10 — monitor adult moth population; trap counts above 8 moths/trap/week indicate spray urgency
- Alternate Bt with Dashparni Ark: Bt every 7 days; Dashparni Ark at 3% on alternate weeks — dual approach prevents adaptation
| Week after transplanting | Management action |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Install pheromone traps; apply Dashparni Ark 3% |
| Week 2–3 | First Bt spray (1.5 kg/acre in 200L water) |
| Week 4–5 | Dashparni Ark spray; scout for DBM larvae in leaves |
| Week 6–7 | Second Bt spray; check pheromone trap counts |
| Week 8–9 | Dashparni Ark spray; begin checking heads for entry holes |
| Week 10+ | Third Bt if DBM pressure continues; reduce watering as harvest approaches |
Other pests and diseases:
- Aphids (cabbage aphid): Neem oil 5 ml/L + liquid soap; Dashparni Ark; natural predators (hoverflies, lacewings) encouraged by border flowering plants
- Black rot (Xanthomonas campestris): Hot-water seed treatment (50°C for 30 min) before sowing; avoid overhead irrigation; copper hydroxide spray at first symptom
- Club root disease: Do not grow brassicas in the same field for 3 years if club root is present; apply agricultural lime to raise pH to 7.0 (club root is suppressed above pH 7.0)
Two-Spray Bt Timing Is More Important Than Total Number of Applications
Bt sprays for caterpillar control only work on early instar (young) larvae — Bt toxin must be consumed with plant material before caterpillars develop protective mechanisms. If you spray Bt when caterpillars are already 1.5–2 cm long and feeding inside the head, the spray provides almost no control. The timing rule: spray Bt within 48–72 hours of seeing first egg masses or first tiny (< 0.5 cm) larvae on outer leaves. At this size, Bt kills larvae within 24–48 hours of ingestion. A well-timed early application of 1.5 kg Bt/acre is 5× more effective than 5 late applications — and saves both money and labour. Set a calendar alert for weekly scouting (30 plants per acre, check undersides of outer leaves) from day 10 after transplanting.
What Is the Harvest and Income Strategy?
- Harvest when heads are firm (press with palm — no give), reach variety-appropriate size, and outer leaves begin to curl back slightly
- Cut at the base with a sharp knife leaving 2–3 outer wrapper leaves for transport protection
- Trim wrapper leaves and grade: A (> 1 kg, tight, blemish-free), B (under 1 kg or minor blemish)
- Organic certified cabbage: ₹18–30/kg urban retail; mandi: ₹8–12/kg
- Red cabbage specialty channel: ₹35–60/kg at organic stores, salad bars, and restaurants in Bengaluru/Mysuru
