Cardamom Organic Farming — Complete Guide for India

Contents

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum), called elaichi in Hindi and ilaichi in Kannada, is the world’s third most expensive spice after saffron and vanilla. India is the second largest producer after Guatemala, with Idukki (Kerala) and Kodagu, Chikkamagalur, and Coorg districts of Karnataka producing India’s finest large-cardamom. Organic certified cardamom commands ₹1,000–2,000/kg for dry capsules versus ₹700–1,200/kg conventional — premium of 30–50% that makes organic certification highly worthwhile. Mature cardamom plantations (3–4 years to full bearing) generate ₹3–8 lakh/acre annually with productive life of 10–15 years per planting. The crop is labour-intensive and requires specific altitude and humidity conditions — not suitable for all areas of Karnataka.

What Climatic Conditions Are Non-Negotiable for Cardamom?

Cardamom requires:

  • Altitude: 600–1,600 m; below 600 m, heat causes yield loss and quality problems
  • Rainfall: 1,500–4,000 mm well distributed; no prolonged dry season
  • Temperature: 10–35°C; below 10°C causes chilling injury; above 35°C damages capsules
  • Shade: 40–50% shade essential — cardamom is a forest understorey plant
  • Humidity: above 70% relative humidity for most of the year

Karnataka areas: Kodagu district (Somwarpet, Madikeri), Chikkamagalur district, Shivamogga district hills, and select areas of Hassan district hills. Not suitable for plains of Mandya, Mysuru, or dry districts.

Which Cardamom Varieties Give the Best Organic Yield?

  • Malabar (IISR Avinash, IISR Vijetha): ICAR-IISR Calicut releases; high yield; round bold capsules; good oil content; recommended for commercial organic production
  • Mysore (Coorg Local): Traditional Karnataka variety; elongated medium capsules; excellent aroma; preferred by flavour extract industry; maintained by Kodagu farmers
  • Njallani (Green Gold): The most productive variety ever; IARI selection from a natural mutant; 3–5× yield of traditional varieties; large bold capsules; has revolutionised small cardamom production in Kerala and is spreading to Karnataka
  • PV-1: Good for humid sites with heavy rainfall; disease-tolerant; moderate yield

Recommendation: Njallani for new commercial plantations seeking maximum yield. For premium aroma oil market: Mysore local alongside Njallani.

How Do You Establish a Cardamom Garden?

Shade trees: Maintain existing forest shade or plant silver oak (Grevillea robusta), Erythrina, or native forest trees (Machilus, Schefflera) at 50–60% shade density. Cardamom planted in full sun fails completely.

Planting material:

  • Suckers from productive mother clumps: dig rhizome suckers with intact roots from certified disease-free gardens
  • Tissue culture plants from ICAR-IISR: true-to-type, disease-free (especially Katte virus-free); recommended for new gardens
  • Seedlings: not recommended (variable quality, disease risk)

Spacing: 2 m × 2 m (1,000 plants/acre) for high-density Njallani; 2.5 m × 2.5 m (640 plants/acre) for traditional varieties.

Pit preparation:

  • 45 cm × 45 cm × 45 cm pits; fill with: 2 kg vermicompost + 100 g neem cake + 25 g Trichoderma + top soil
  • Mulch around base with dry leaves 5 cm thick — critical for moisture retention

Planting season: June–July (onset of South-west monsoon) or September–October (onset of North-east monsoon for some areas).

What Organic Nutrition Does Cardamom Need Annually?

Cardamom is a moderate feeder but responds well to consistent organic inputs:

Annual nutrition schedule per clump:

  • May–June: 2 kg vermicompost + 100 g neem cake; apply around base under mulch
  • August: Jeevamrutha drench 5 litres per plant
  • September (capsule development): Panchagavya foliar 3% spray; improves capsule size and oil content
  • November (post-harvest): 1 kg vermicompost per plant

Total annual input: approximately 3 kg vermicompost + 100 g neem cake per plant; total per acre: 3 tonnes vermicompost + 100 kg neem cake.

Mulching with dry leaves or coffee husk (available in Kodagu) is essential — reduces irrigation and weed management significantly.

How Do You Manage Cardamom Pests and Diseases Organically?

Cardamom mosaic virus (Katte disease): The most devastating disease; spread by aphid vectors; causes yellowing and distortion of leaves; no cure. Prevention:

  • Plant only virus-indexed TC plants or suckers from certified Katte-free gardens
  • Spray neem oil 5 ml/L to control aphid vectors monthly during growing season
  • Remove and destroy infected clumps immediately at first symptom; plant resistant varieties

Thrips (Sciothrips cardamomi): Damages capsules, causing silver streaking that reduces market value. Spray neem oil + neem seed kernel extract 5% at capsule initiation stage.

Root grub (white grub, Holotrichia): Feeds on roots; causes sudden wilting. Apply neem cake at planting; Beauveria bassiana 2g/L soil drench as biological control.

Capsule borer (Dichocrocis punctiferalis): Larvae bore into developing capsules. Spray Bt 2g/L at capsule development stage.

How Do You Harvest and Process Cardamom Capsules?

Cardamom capsules ripen September–February (staggered; harvest in multiple rounds). Harvest at correct maturity: capsules should be green-blue and firm; creamy-white stage means over-mature and prone to shell splitting.

Curing (for green cardamom):

  1. Wash harvested capsules in water
  2. Spread in single layer in curing chamber (heated room maintained at 45–50°C) for 48 hours
  3. Green colour fixed by heat; capsules become light green
  4. Store in airtight containers; pack in food-grade moisture-barrier bags

Yield: First harvest at 2–3 years; full production at 4 years:

  • Traditional variety: 100–200 kg dry/acre/year
  • Njallani: 300–600 kg dry/acre/year
