Coriander Seed Farming — Commercial Guide
Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is India’s #1 exported spice by value — India ships over 1 lakh tonnes annually to Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and EU. Organic certified dhania seed fetches ₹10,000–18,000/quintal versus ₹5,000–8,000 conventional. With 6–10 quintals/acre yield in 90–120 days, organic coriander seed delivers ₹35,000–70,000/acre net income — one of the most accessible entry-level spice crops for Karnataka and Rajasthan farmers.

Which coriander varieties are best for seed production?
RCr-41 (Rajasthan Coriander): Most popular commercial seed variety — large bold seeds, high essential oil content (0.5–0.8%), 110–120 days, resistant to stem gall (Protomyces macrosporus). Strong in Rajasthan and north Karnataka markets.
CO-3 (Tamil Nadu): Performs well in South Indian conditions including North Karnataka — 95–100 days, good seed yield, moderate disease resistance.
Sadhana and Swathi (from NRCSS Ajmer): Improved varieties with higher yield potential (8–10 qtl/acre) under irrigated conditions. Suited for Karnataka’s rabi season (October–February).
Sindhu (Gujarat): High yielder in Gujarat’s light soils — bold seed, good market appearance.
For leaf (kothamalli/herb) + seed dual purpose: CS-6 or local varieties — harvest leaves first at 30–40 DAS (3–4 cuttings), then let remaining stand for seed.
What conditions does coriander seed farming need?
Coriander is a cool-season crop that bolts to seed in response to cooler temperatures and short days — making it inherently a rabi crop across India. In Karnataka, sow October–November for harvest in January–February.
Temperature: 20–28°C for vegetative growth; 15–20°C for flowering and seed set. Temperatures above 32°C during flowering cause pollen sterility and poor seed set.
Rainfall: Low to moderate (250–750 mm in season). High humidity and foggy conditions trigger blight — coriander’s most destructive disease.
Soil: Sandy loam to loam, well-drained, pH 6.5–8.0. In Karnataka, the black cotton soils of Vijayapura and Bagalkote, and the red soils of Chitradurga, are suitable. Avoid heavy soils prone to waterlogging.
Soil preparation: Two deep ploughings, two harrowing passes. Apply 3 tonnes of vermicompost or 6 tonnes FYM per acre before final land prep. Ensure perfect seedbed tilth — coriander seeds are small.

An important note on seed handling: Coriander fruits (the “seeds” we plant) are actually twin achenes — each contains two seeds. Rubbing seeds gently between palms to split them into two halves improves germination uniformity and reduces seed rate needed.
Seed rate: 6–8 kg/acre split seed; 10–12 kg whole (unsplit).
Spacing: 30 cm between rows × 10–12 cm between plants. Line sowing with a seed drill at 2–3 cm depth. Broadcasting makes weeding difficult and reduces yield.
Seed treatment: Soak in water for 6–8 hours, drain, then coat with Trichoderma (5 g/kg) + Pseudomonas (10 g/kg). Sun-dry for 30 minutes before sowing.
Irrigation at sowing: Sow into moist soil (post-irrigation or light rain). First irrigation 7 days after sowing to ensure uniform germination. Total irrigations needed: 4–6 (at sowing, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 DAS).
How do you manage coriander pests and diseases organically?
| Problem | Organic Solution | Critical Stage | Cost/Acre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blight (Ramularia + Alternaria) | Copper oxychloride 0.3% spray | Post-flowering | ₹500 |
| Stem gall (Protomyces) | Avoid infected seed; Trichoderma treatment | Seedling | ₹300 |
| Aphids (Hyadaphis coriandri) | Neem oil 2% + soap spray | Vegetative–flowering | ₹350 |
| Powdery mildew | Wettable sulphur 2 g/litre | Dry-weather periods | ₹280 |
| Grain moth (Ephestia) | Light traps + neem for stored seed | Post-harvest | ₹200 |
Dual-Use Strategy: Leaves First, Seed Later
Coriander leaf (kothamalli) fetches ₹20–50/kg in retail markets — far higher per kg than seed. A smart commercial strategy: sow at double density (12 kg/acre), harvest three leaf cuttings at 30, 45, and 60 DAS (each cutting: 1–2 qtl/acre, total ₹8,000–15,000 additional income), then reduce to standard plant density by thinning and allow remaining plants to run to seed normally. This dual-use system adds ₹10,000–20,000 to the income of a coriander seed crop without meaningfully affecting seed yield. The key is to stop leaf harvest by 60 DAS — cutting after this point removes the primary flowering stalks and dramatically reduces seed yield. Several vegetable farmers in Mandya and Kolar districts have adopted this system and report combined leaf + seed incomes of ₹80,000–1,00,000/acre.
When and how is coriander seed harvested?
Coriander is ready for harvest 90–120 days after sowing when plant stems turn yellow-brown and seeds are light brown but before they shatter. The harvest window is narrow — 5–7 days.
Harvesting: Cut plants at ground level in the morning when dew is present — this reduces shattering loss by 20–30%. Bundle and dry on clean tarpaulin for 3–5 days. Thresh by beating or power thresher at low speed.
Cleaning and grading: Winnow, screen through a 2 mm sieve to remove small and shrivelled seeds. Dry to below 10% moisture. Grade by size and aroma. Large, bold, uniformly round seeds with high oil content fetch the highest prices.
Storage: Store in jute bags or hermetic containers in cool, dry conditions. Coriander seed retains aroma for 12–18 months in proper storage. Use neem leaf layering (not chemical fumigants) for organic storage.
What income can organic coriander seed generate?
| Scenario | Yield | Price | Input Cost | Net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional | 7 qtl | ₹6,500/qtl | ₹18,000 | ₹27,500 |
| Organic certified | 7 qtl | ₹14,000/qtl | ₹15,000 | ₹83,000 |
| Organic + leaf harvest | 6 qtl seed + 3 qtl leaf | combined | ₹17,000 | ₹1,05,000 |
