Horsegram (Kulith) Farming Guide
Horsegram (Macrotyloma uniflorum) — called hurali in Kannada, kulith in Hindi — is India’s most drought-tolerant pulse, grown on 4 lakh+ acres across Karnataka alone. It thrives on marginal, rainfed soils with as little as 400 mm annual rainfall, requires zero irrigation in most situations, fixes nitrogen, and fetches ₹6,000–9,000/quintal in organic markets. Net income: ₹20,000–35,000/acre with almost no input cost.

Which horsegram varieties are recommended for organic farming?
Karnataka has several released varieties suited to organic dryland farming. PHULE HORSE GRAM-9 (PHG-9) is the most widely grown in Deccan Karnataka — it matures in 90–95 days with 6–8 qtl/acre yield. VZM-2 (Vizianagaram) suits Andhra and parts of south Karnataka with its higher disease tolerance. Mandya Local (a landrace) produces smaller seeds with a stronger flavour — commands a premium in local markets and is preferred for the traditional hurali saaru (rasam) that Kannada cuisine is known for.
For PGS organic certification, using saved local seed is ideal since it’s free from chemical seed treatment history. Treat saved seed with Trichoderma (5 g/kg) + Pseudomonas (10 g/kg) before sowing.
What conditions does horsegram grow best in?
Horsegram’s superpower is its adaptation to poor, gravelly, and shallow soils (Alfisols) where other pulses fail. pH tolerance: 5.5–8.0. It performs best in Karnataka’s red laterite soils of Tumkur, Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, and Ramanagara districts.
Climate: Semi-arid to sub-humid tropics. Sow during kharif (June–July with first monsoon rains) or rabi (October–November on residual soil moisture). Average annual rainfall requirement: 400–800 mm.
Minimal soil prep is needed — horsegram is traditionally sown with a single plough pass after kharif harvest, taking advantage of residual moisture and crop stubble. This “minimal tillage” approach preserves soil organic matter and reduces erosion — perfectly aligned with organic principles.

Seed rate: 8–10 kg/acre for row sowing; 12–15 kg for broadcasting.
Spacing: 30 cm row-to-row × 10 cm plant-to-plant. Line sowing with a seed drill improves yield by 20–25% over broadcasting and makes weeding far easier.
Rhizobium inoculation: Use Rhizobium isolates specific to horsegram (available from state agricultural universities). Mix 50 g/kg seed with jaggery solution, dry in shade for 30 minutes, then sow. This alone can add 15–25 kg N/acre to the field.
Intercropping: Horsegram is excellent as an intercrop in coconut gardens, mango orchards, and young areca nut plantations (1–3 years). It uses shade and residual moisture efficiently while adding nitrogen for the main crop.
What pests and diseases affect horsegram organically?
| Problem | Organic Control | Stage | Cost/Acre |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leaf webber (Lampides boeticus) | Neem seed kernel extract (NSKE 5%) | Vegetative | ₹300 |
| Pod fly (Melanagromyza) | Yellow sticky traps + Bt | Flowering | ₹400 |
| Powdery mildew | Cow urine 10% spray | Pre-flowering | ₹100 |
| Root rot (Fusarium) | Trichoderma viride soil treatment | Pre-sowing | ₹200 |
| Whitefly (mosaic vector) | Neem oil 2% + yellow traps | Throughout | ₹350 |
Key point: Because horsegram is a low-input dryland crop, organic pest management costs are typically ₹1,000–2,000/acre total — far below the returns it delivers.
Use Horsegram as a Soil Reclamation Tool
Karnataka’s degraded red laterite soils — common in Tumkur, Chitradurga, and Haveri districts — often have less than 0.3% organic matter and severe nitrogen deficiency. Horsegram, when grown for 2–3 seasons and ploughed in as green manure at flowering stage (rather than harvested), adds 40–60 kg N/acre and increases organic matter by 0.2–0.4% per cycle. This “build then harvest” approach — alternating one green manure season with one grain harvest season — progressively restores soil fertility while generating income every other year. Several farmers in Mandya taluk have used this method to bring degraded soils back to productive capacity in 4–5 years without any chemical input.
When and how do you harvest horsegram?
Horsegram is ready when 70–80% of pods turn brown to dark brown. Unlike lentil, horsegram pods do not shatter easily, giving a wider harvest window of 7–10 days. Cut plants at the base with a sickle, bundle, and sun-dry on a threshing floor for 3–5 days.
Thresh by beating on a drum or use a power thresher at low speed (horsegram seeds crack easily at high thresher speeds). Winnow and sun-dry grain to below 12% moisture. Store in jute sacks or hermetic bags away from moisture.
Straw value: Horsegram straw is highly nutritious cattle fodder — 8–10 qtl straw per acre, worth ₹2,000–3,000 additionally. This is often overlooked in income calculations.
What income can you earn from 1 acre of organic horsegram?
| Scenario | Low (drought year) | Average | Good year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grain yield | 3 qtl | 5–6 qtl | 7–8 qtl |
| Price (organic) | ₹6,500/qtl | ₹7,500/qtl | ₹9,000/qtl |
| Straw income | ₹2,000 | ₹2,500 | ₹3,000 |
| Input cost | ₹3,000 | ₹5,000 | ₹6,000 |
| Net income | ₹16,500 | ₹35,000 | ₹60,000 |
Organic horsegram commands strong premium pricing from Ayurvedic product manufacturers (horsegram is used in kidney stone management and weight loss preparations) — direct tie-ups with companies like Kottakkal Arya Vaidya Sala or local organic stores can double your price realisation.
