Lentil (Masoor) Farming Guide

Masoor dal (red lentil) is one of India’s most profitable rabi pulses, yielding 6–10 quintals/acre on organic farms in 110–120 days, with farm-gate prices of ₹5,000–7,000/quintal and a net income of ₹25,000–40,000/acre after organic inputs costing just ₹8,000–12,000. It fixes nitrogen, improves soil, and requires minimal irrigation — making it ideal for dryland Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

What varieties of masoor work best for organic farming?

India offers several well-adapted masoor varieties. K-75 and DPL-62 are the most popular in central India, maturing in 110–115 days with good disease resistance. Pant L-406 suits cooler North Indian plains. For Karnataka’s northern districts (Bidar, Kalaburagi), WBL-77 and HUL-57 perform well in black cotton soil. Avoid very old desi landraces in high-humidity zones — they’re prone to rust and blight. If sourcing organic-certified seed is not possible, treat conventional seeds with Trichoderma viride at 4–5 g/kg seed before sowing to suppress soil-borne pathogens.

Rhizobium inoculation is non-negotiable in organic systems. Mix Rhizobium leguminosarum inoculant (50 g/kg seed) with jaggery solution and apply 30 minutes before sowing. This alone can eliminate the need for any nitrogen fertiliser and add 20–40 kg N/acre to soil for the next crop.

What soil and climate conditions does masoor need?

Masoor thrives in well-drained loamy and sandy-loam soils with a pH of 6.0–7.5. Heavy clay soils waterlog easily and cause root rot. In Karnataka, the black cotton soils (Vertisols) of Kalaburagi district retain sufficient moisture for dryland lentil growing. Avoid fields with a history of waterlogging.

Climate: Masoor is a cool-season crop. Sow when temperatures are 15–25°C (day) and 5–15°C (night). In Karnataka’s northern districts, sow October–November after kharif harvest. In Madhya Pradesh and UP, sow mid-October to mid-November.

Soil preparation: Two deep ploughings (30 cm) followed by two harrowing passes. Apply 3–4 tonnes of well-composted FYM or vermicompost per acre before last ploughing. Ensure perfect tilth — lentil seeds are small and need fine seedbed for uniform germination.

How do you plant masoor for maximum yield?

Seed rate: 12–15 kg/acre for large-seeded varieties; 10–12 kg for small-seeded types.

Spacing: Row-to-row 25–30 cm; plant-to-plant 5–7 cm (achieved via line sowing with seed drill). Broadcasting wastes seed and makes weeding difficult.

Sowing depth: 3–5 cm. Deeper sowing delays emergence and reduces stand.

Intercropping: Masoor + mustard (9:1 ratio) is a traditional system that improves net returns by ₹8,000–12,000/acre without extra input cost. The mustard acts as a windbreak and partial pest barrier.

Jeevamrutha application at sowing (200 litres/acre as soil drench) kick-starts microbial activity and improves seedling establishment dramatically. A second Jeevamrutha drench at 30 DAS supports vegetative growth.

How much water does masoor need?

Masoor is a low-water crop — two to three irrigations are sufficient in most Indian conditions:

  1. Pre-sowing irrigation (if soil is dry)
  2. At branching stage (30–35 DAS)
  3. At pod-filling stage (70–80 DAS)

Drip irrigation with 1.5–2 litres/plant/day during critical stages improves yield by 15–20% over flood irrigation. Avoid irrigation after flowering begins if rain is expected — waterlogging at flowering causes flower drop and reduces yield significantly.

How do you manage pests and diseases organically?

ProblemOrganic SolutionTimingCost/Acre
Aphids (Aphis craccivora)Neem oil 3% + soap sprayAt first infestation₹350
Pod borer (Helicoverpa)NPV @ 250 LE/acre + Bt sprayEgg-laying stage₹500
Rust (Uromyces viciae)Sulphur dust 8 kg/acreAt first signs₹280
Wilt (Fusarium)Trichoderma soil drenchAt sowing₹200
Leaf minerYellow sticky traps + neemVegetative stage₹400

Monitoring: Walk fields every 5–7 days from 25 DAS. Install 10–12 yellow sticky traps/acre for early aphid and leaf miner detection.

Rhizobium + PSB Combined Inoculation

Most farmers use only Rhizobium. Adding Phosphate Solubilising Bacteria (PSB) at 50 g/kg seed alongside Rhizobium unlocks soil phosphorus — lentil is a heavy phosphorus feeder at pod formation. In trials at IIPR Kanpur, combined inoculation with Rhizobium + PSB + Zinc Solubilising Bacteria increased lentil yield by 18–22% over Rhizobium alone, with zero chemical fertiliser input. Use separate packets, mix with jaggery solution, and apply on seed just before sowing. This single practice can add 1–2 quintals/acre to your yield.

When and how do you harvest masoor?

Masoor is ready for harvest when 80–85% of pods turn straw-yellow and leaves begin to drop. Do not wait for all pods to mature — over-mature pods shatter easily during mechanical harvest.

Harvesting method: Small farms — scythe or sickle, cut at ground level. Bundle and sun-dry for 3–5 days. Thresh by beating bundles on a drum or use a power thresher. Winnow immediately to prevent grain damage.

Storage: Moisture content at storage must be below 12%. Use hermetic bags (Purdue Improved Crop Storage bags) or metal bins. Do not use chemical fumigants on organic-certified produce — use CO₂ flushing or neem leaf layering instead.

What is the income potential from organic masoor?

Selling through NAFED, FPO aggregators, or organic brands like 24 Mantra and Organic India can fetch ₹8,000–10,000/quintal — doubling your net income. Getting PGS organic certification (₹2,000–5,000/group) is the first step to accessing these premium markets.
