Agniastra and Brahmastra: ZBNF Botanical Insecticides

Agniastra and Brahmastra are the strongest botanical pest control preparations in the ZBNF system β€” concentrated extracts boiled with chilli, garlic, neem, and other botanicals in cow urine, producing a potent insecticidal and repellent brew effective against caterpillars, borers, and sucking pest infestations that Dashparni Ark alone cannot control. Where Dashparni Ark is a fermented, broad-spectrum preventive, Agniastra is a boiled, high-concentration curative spray designed for active infestations. Brahmastra uses different botanicals and is especially effective against sucking pests and borers. Both are used at heavy dilution (1–3%) and applied in the evening. They cost almost nothing β€” all ingredients are farm-grown β€” but they must be used carefully because the concentration can cause phytotoxicity if overdiluted too little.

Boiled extraction

Unlike Dashparni Ark (cold fermented), Agniastra and Brahmastra are boiled β€” heat extraction releases alkaloids and essential oils faster

3% dilution

Standard application rate β€” 3 litres per 100 litres water; always test on 2–3 plants first before full spray

No fermentation wait

Ready to use on the same day as preparation β€” boiling replaces the 30–40 day fermentation of Dashparni Ark

Strong caterpillar control

Agniastra's primary strength β€” nicotine from tobacco and capsaicin from chilli target Lepidoptera larvae where Dashparni Ark is only moderate

What Is Agniastra β€” Recipe and Preparation?

Agniastra ingredients (base recipe β€” produces approximately 20 litres):

IngredientQuantityPurpose
Desi cow urine10 litresCarrier and activator; alkaline pH enhances extraction
Green chilli (whole)500 gramsCapsaicin β€” acute irritant; contact repellent and deterrent
Garlic500 grams (crushed)Allicin β€” broad insecticidal; antifungal; penetrates soft insect cuticle
Neem leaves2 kg (fresh, crushed)Azadirachtin and limonoids β€” anti-feedant; insect growth disruptor
Tobacco leaves (dried)250 gramsNicotine β€” powerful neurotoxin to insects; especially lethal to caterpillars and sucking pests

Preparation method:

  1. Crush or coarsely chop all plant materials
  2. Add all ingredients to a large vessel (30–50 litre pot)
  3. Bring to a boil on medium heat; boil continuously for 20 minutes, stirring regularly
  4. Remove from heat; cover; allow to cool completely (2–3 hours)
  5. Strain through a fine cloth β€” squeeze all liquid from plant material
  6. Store strained liquid in a sealed container in shade
  7. Use within 10 days; potency declines after 2 weeks

Yield: Approximately 8–10 litres of concentrated Agniastra from this recipe.

What Is Brahmastra β€” Recipe and Preparation?

Brahmastra uses a different plant combination β€” heavier on bark and root extracts β€” and is particularly effective against borers, stem feeders, and heavier sucking pest infestations:

Brahmastra ingredients (base recipe β€” 20 litres base):

IngredientQuantityPurpose
Desi cow urine10 litresCarrier and activator
Neem bark or leaves2 kgAzadirachtin; antifeedant; growth disruptor
Custard apple (Annona) leaves2 kgAcetogenins β€” potent insecticidal; effective against borers
Papaya leaves2 kgPapain; alkaloids β€” insecticidal; broad-spectrum deterrent
Guava leaves2 kgTannins; essential oils β€” antimicrobial; feeding deterrent
Pomegranate leaves or bark2 kgEllagitannins β€” astringent; insecticidal; particularly active against sucking pests

Preparation method:

  1. Crush or chop all leaves coarsely; if using bark, crush into small pieces
  2. Combine all in a vessel; add 10 litres cow urine
  3. Boil on medium heat for 20 minutes; stirring frequently
  4. Cool, strain through fine cloth; store sealed in shade
  5. Use within 10 days

How and When Do You Apply Agniastra and Brahmastra?

ParameterAgniastraBrahmastra
Primary target pestsCaterpillars (all Lepidoptera), aphids, whiteflies, thripsStem borers, bark beetles, sucking pests on thick-leaved crops, leaf-rollers

Phytotoxicity testAlways test on 2–3 plants; wait 24 hours before full sprayAlways test on 2–3 plants; wait 24 hours before full spray
Application timingEvening (after 5 PM) or early morning; never middayEvening or early morning; never in direct hot sun
Frequency (curative)Every 5 days for 3 applications during active infestationEvery 5–7 days for 3 applications; then assess
Frequency (preventive)Not typically used preventively β€” reserve for active infestationsNot typically used preventively β€” too concentrated for routine use
Sensitive crops (reduce dose)Seedlings, leafy greens β€” use at 1–2% firstSeedlings, leafy greens β€” use at 1–2% first

Application rules:

  • Never mix with Jeevamrutha or biofertilisers β€” nicotine and allicin kill beneficial soil microbes
  • Apply at least 5 days before or after any biofertiliser soil drench
  • Tobacco nicotine kills bees β€” never spray when crops are flowering and pollinators are active
  • Wear gloves and a mask when preparing and spraying β€” nicotine is absorbed through skin

Which Pests Do Agniastra and Brahmastra Control?

PestAgniastraBrahmastraNotes
Caterpillars (young, < 3 cm)ExcellentGoodNicotine is directly lethal to soft Lepidoptera larvae; spray directly onto caterpillars
Caterpillars (large, > 3 cm)GoodModerateLarge caterpillars are harder to kill; combine with hand removal
AphidsExcellentGoodGarlic allicin and nicotine work together; 2–3 applications control most aphid infestations
ThripsGoodGoodCapsaicin and nicotine effective; combine with Dashparni Ark in rotation
Stem borersModerateGoodBrahmastra's bark extracts penetrate soft stem tissue better; inject diluted extract near entry holes
WhitefliesGood (repellency)Good (repellency)Neither kills adult whiteflies well; both repel; use yellow sticky traps in combination
MealybugsModerateModerateWaxy coating protects mealybugs; garlic penetrates somewhat; physical removal still needed
Powdery mildewModerate (preventive)Good (preventive)Garlic and guava tannins have antifungal properties; not a replacement for dedicated fungal management

Rotate Agniastra, Brahmastra, and Dashparni Ark β€” Never Rely on Just One

Pest management with botanicals works best as a rotation β€” if you spray Agniastra every time, pests gradually adapt their behaviour to avoid the smell. The ZBNF approach recommends a 3-spray rotation: Agniastra β†’ Dashparni Ark β†’ Brahmastra β†’ repeat. Each formulation has a different smell profile and active compounds, so pests cannot develop consistent avoidance behaviour. The rotation also means each botanical’s active compounds hit at different times in the pest life cycle. Dashparni Ark handles the broad baseline; Agniastra is used when caterpillars are sighted; Brahmastra when stem damage is noticed. Keep all three prepared in the same season so you can rotate without delay β€” a week of delay when an infestation is building can mean 50% yield loss.
