Beejamrutha Seed Treatment: Preparation and Application Guide

Beejamrutha is a seed treatment solution used in Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF) that coats seeds with beneficial soil microbes from desi cow dung and urine, protecting seeds from soil-borne fungal diseases and promoting early root and shoot development. It replaces the chemical fungicide seed treatments (thiram, captan, carbendazim) used in conventional farming with a biological inoculant made entirely from farm inputs at near-zero cost. Soaking seeds in Beejamrutha for 24 hours before sowing has been shown in multiple Karnataka farm trials to improve germination rate by 10–15% and early crop vigour significantly, particularly in soils with active biological activity from Jeevamrutha applications.

24 hours

Seed soaking time in Beejamrutha β€” not 12 hours, not 48 hours; 24 hours is the correct duration

Desi cow only

Beejamrutha must use desi cow dung and urine β€” exotic/Jersey cow inputs have fewer beneficial microbes

Fungal protection

Beneficial microbes in Beejamrutha coat the seed and outcompete soil-borne pathogens at germination

How Do You Prepare Beejamrutha?

Ingredients for 1 litre of Beejamrutha solution (treats approximately 1 kg seeds):

  • 100 grams desi cow fresh dung (not dried; fresh is critical for live microbes)
  • 100 ml desi cow urine (fresh; not stored for more than 1 week)
  • 5 grams unprocessed lime (chunna; the kind used for paan β€” not quicklime)
  • 1 small handful of soil from your farm’s topsoil (below the mulch layer)
  • 1 litre water (rainwater or borewell water; not chlorinated tap water)

Preparation:

  1. Mix cow dung thoroughly into the 1 litre of water
  2. Add cow urine; mix again
  3. Dissolve the lime separately in a small amount of water; then add the lime solution to the main mixture
  4. Add the handful of farm soil; stir well
  5. Allow to rest for 12 hours (overnight) before using
  6. Before use, strain through a fine cloth β€” the liquid goes on seeds; solid particles are discarded or composted

Shelf life: Use within 24 hours of preparation. Beejamrutha does not store well β€” the microbial population degrades rapidly after preparation. Make fresh for each use.

How Do You Apply Beejamrutha to Seeds?

Method 1 β€” Soaking (for large seeds):

  1. Place seeds (beans, groundnut, maize, cowpea, sunflower) in the Beejamrutha liquid
  2. Soak for 24 hours
  3. Remove seeds; dry in shade for 30 minutes (not sun β€” kills surface microbes)
  4. Sow immediately while seeds are still slightly moist

Method 2 β€” Coating (for small seeds):

  1. For small seeds (coriander, methi, spinach, onion) where soaking is impractical:
  2. Wet seeds with a small amount of Beejamrutha liquid (just enough to moisten the surface)
  3. Spread on a clean cloth; allow to dry in shade for 30 minutes
  4. Sow immediately

Method 3 β€” Root dip for transplants:

  1. Before transplanting seedlings (tomato, brinjal, chilli), dip the entire root zone in Beejamrutha liquid for 15–30 minutes
  2. Transplant immediately after dipping
  3. This applies the beneficial microbial inoculant directly to the root zone where it is most effective

What Are the Benefits of Beejamrutha Treatment?

BenefitMechanismEvidence
Protection from seed-borne pathogensBeneficial bacteria and fungi on the seed surface outcompete damping-off organisms (Pythium, Fusarium) at germinationReported 20–30% reduction in damping-off in Beejamrutha-treated plots vs untreated
Improved germination rateEnzymes in cow dung and urine may soften seed coat; microbes produce growth-promoting compounds10–15% improvement in germination rate reported across Karnataka ZBNF farms
Faster root developmentMicrobial inoculants produce auxins (root-promoting hormones) that accelerate root hair developmentSeedlings from treated seeds show visibly more developed root systems at 7 days
Soil biology inoculationEach treated seed introduces beneficial microbes into the soil at the germination pointContributes to establishing beneficial microbial communities in the rhizosphere
Zero cost (farm inputs)All ingredients are available from a desi cow on the farm; lime is β‚Ή10/kgReplaces β‚Ή200–500/kg chemical fungicide seed treatments

Which Seeds Respond Best to Beejamrutha?

Seed TypeResponse to BeejamruthaMethod
Legumes (beans, cowpea, groundnut)Excellent β€” high response to microbial inoculation; seed-borne Rhizobium inoculation from cow dung aids nodulationSoak 24 hours
Cereals (maize, sorghum, millets)Very good β€” significant germination improvement in low-fertility soilsSoak 12–24 hours
Large vegetable seeds (pumpkin, cucumber, bitter gourd)Good β€” improved germination and seedling vigourSoak 24 hours
Tomato, brinjal, capsicum (transplant treatment)Excellent β€” root dip at transplanting is highly effectiveRoot dip 30 minutes
Small seeds (spinach, coriander, onion)Moderate β€” coating is less thorough than soakingCoating method
Rice (paddy)Good β€” traditional ZBNF treatment for paddy seed before nursery sowingSoak 24 hours

The Desi Cow Is Not Optional in Beejamrutha β€” Jersey Dung Does Not Work the Same

The ZBNF principle of using desi (indigenous) cow products is not cultural romanticism β€” it is based on a practical difference in microbial population. Research from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and independent studies have found that desi cow dung contains 300–500 crore beneficial microorganisms per gram, compared to significantly fewer in Jersey and HF crossbreed cattle dung. The smaller size, different diet (grazing on native grasses and plants), and slower digestion of desi cattle creates dung with a richer and more diverse microbial community. If you do not have access to a desi cow, find a neighbour who does β€” even 100 grams of fresh desi cow dung per batch of Beejamrutha is worth the effort of collecting.
