Seed Treatment Methods for Organic Farms: Biological and Traditional

Seed treatment is one of the highest-leverage points of crop protection — treating 100 grams of seed costs pennies and can prevent diseases that would destroy thousands of rupees of standing crop. Conventional seed treatments use synthetic fungicides (thiram, captan, carbendazim) or insecticides (imidacloprid) that are prohibited in organic farming. Organic alternatives — Beejamrutha, Trichoderma viride biocontrol, hot water treatment, and cow milk treatment — provide effective protection against the primary seed-borne and soil-borne diseases that damage germinating seeds and young seedlings, particularly damping-off caused by Pythium and Fusarium species.

Beejamrutha

Primary organic seed treatment for ZBNF farms — beneficial microbes protect against soil-borne pathogens at germination

Trichoderma viride

Most effective biological fungicide for seed treatment — commercial biocontrol agent; 4–6 grams per kg seed

Hot water treatment

50–55°C water for 25–30 minutes kills seed-borne pathogens without chemicals — requires accurate temperature control

Never treat then store

Treated seeds must be sown within 24 hours — biological treatments lose efficacy rapidly in storage

What Organic Seed Treatment Methods Are Available?

TreatmentMethodTarget DiseaseCostEffectiveness
Beejamrutha (ZBNF)Soak seeds 24 hours in fresh Beejamrutha solution; drain; dry briefly; sow immediatelyDamping-off (Pythium, Fusarium); general soil-borne pathogens; improves germinationNear zero (farm inputs)Good to very good on organic farms with established soil biology
Trichoderma viride (commercial biocontrol)Mix 4–6 grams per kg of seed with small amount of water or Jeevamrutha as carrier; coat seeds; sow within 24 hoursFusarium, Pythium, Rhizoctonia — the primary damping-off organisms₹200–400 per kg Trichoderma powder; treat 150–200 kg seedVery good — most research-supported biological seed treatment
Hot water treatment (for seed-borne viruses)Suspend seeds in 50–55°C water for 25–30 minutes (use a cooking thermometer); cool immediately in cold water; dry and sowTomato Mosaic Virus, bacterial canker in tomato; some Brassica diseasesZero cost; requires temperature controlEffective against seed-borne viruses and bacteria; does not protect from soil-borne disease
Cow milk treatment (traditional)Soak seeds 30–60 minutes in fresh whole milk; drain; dry briefly in shade; sowSome antiviral properties claimed; improves germination; traditional ZBNF practiceNear zero on a cattle farmModerate; works better in combination with Beejamrutha
Neem seed kernel extract1–2% concentration; soak 30–60 minutes before sowingInsect egg hatching on/near germinating seeds₹100–200 per litre extractModerate for soil insect protection; not for fungal disease
Pseudomonas fluorescens (commercial biocontrol)Mix 10 grams per kg seed; coat and sow within 24 hoursBroad-spectrum bacteria that suppress soil pathogens; also promotes root growth₹200–400 per kg; similar to TrichodermaGood; particularly effective in waterlogged-prone soils

Which Treatment Should You Choose?

For most Karnataka organic vegetable farms: Use Beejamrutha as the primary seed treatment (if you follow ZBNF methods) OR Trichoderma viride as a commercial biocontrol agent if you do not maintain a desi cow for Beejamrutha preparation. Both can be used together — Trichoderma coating followed by brief Beejamrutha dip — for maximum protection.

For hot water treatment: Use specifically when you have a history of Tomato Mosaic Virus or bacterial canker in your tomato crops. These are seed-borne and the hot water treatment breaks the seed-to-seedling-to-crop virus cycle that perpetuates these diseases.

For nursery (damping-off prevention): Damping-off is the primary nursery disease. Use Trichoderma viride at seed treatment AND as a drench into the nursery media at sowing — 10 grams per 10 litres of water; water the cells immediately after sowing. This two-point application (on seed + in media) dramatically reduces damping-off even in humid conditions.

What Chemical Seed Treatments Are Prohibited on Organic Farms?

Chemical TreatmentUsed AgainstWhy Prohibited
Thiram (fungicide)Damping-off; seed-borne fungiSynthetic chemical fungicide; prohibited under NPOP and NOP
Captan (fungicide)Fusarium, Pythium damping-offSynthetic; probable human carcinogen; prohibited
Carbendazim (fungicide)Broad-spectrum fungal diseasesSystemic synthetic fungicide; endocrine disruptor; prohibited
Imidacloprid (neonicotinoid insecticide)Soil insects, aphids, leafhoppersSystemic neonicotinoid; bee toxicity; prohibited in organic; seeds coated with imidacloprid are bright coloured (visible)
Thiamethoxam (neonicotinoid)Soil insectsSame as imidacloprid; prohibited
Metalaxyl (fungicide)Pythium; downy mildewSystemic fungicide; prohibited

How to identify treated seeds: Commercially treated seeds are almost always brightly coloured — pink, blue, green, red — from the polymer coating and dye used to mark them as treated. If seeds are unnaturally coloured, they are chemically treated and cannot be used on an organic farm.

Combine Trichoderma and Beejamrutha — They Are Compatible

Trichoderma viride (commercial biological fungicide) and Beejamrutha are compatible and can be used together for maximum seed protection. Method: coat seeds with Trichoderma viride powder first (4–6g per kg seed); allow 30 minutes to adhere; then briefly dip the Trichoderma-coated seeds in Beejamrutha liquid for 1 hour (not the full 24-hour soak — the Beejamrutha soak is for uncoated seeds). Drain and sow within 2 hours. The Trichoderma provides the primary antifungal biological control; the Beejamrutha adds the full spectrum of beneficial soil microbes. This combination has been used successfully by progressive ZBNF farmers in Mandya district and produces notably better seedling establishment than either treatment alone.
