A crop earns money once. A farm experience earns money without depleting the crop. Agritourism is the fastest-growing secondary income stream for Karnataka organic farmers within driving distance of Bengaluru and Mysuru. The Mandya–Mysuru corridor is particularly well-positioned: two hours from Bengaluru, scenic landscape, and a growing urban population actively seeking outdoor weekend experiences for their children.

Three Agritourism Revenue Formats

Weekend day visits (₹500–1,500 per head) are the simplest entry point. Visitors arrive Saturday or Sunday morning, spend 2–4 hours on the farm — walking the fields, feeding cows, planting a seedling, harvesting whatever is ripe — and leave after a farm-cooked lunch. No accommodation needed. Minimum infrastructure: clean toilets, a shaded seating area, and good water supply.

Overnight homestay (₹2,000–4,000 per night for a family room) requires a dedicated guest room with attached bathroom. Revenue per occupied night is 2–4x a day visit. School and college group visits (₹150–250 per student) require a structured 90-minute programme: introduction to organic farming, demonstration of bio-input preparation, hands-on planting activity, and a Q&A. Schools pay per head and arrange their own transport. One school group of 40 students generates ₹6,000–10,000 for a half-day activity that does not disrupt your farm work.

What Visitors Actually Want

Urban visitors — especially parents with children aged 5–14 — are not looking for a farming lecture. They want tactile experiences: touching soil, collecting eggs, feeding a calf, pulling a carrot from the ground. Design your visit around 4–5 such activities. Let children carry a small basket and harvest cherry tomatoes themselves. Let adults stir a jeevamrutha pot and smell the fermentation. These moments create the social media posts that bring your next visitors.

Legal and Registration Requirements

An FSSAI basic registration (₹100/year) is required if you serve food to visitors. For homestays taking paying guests, your farm should have a trade licence from the local gram panchayat. Karnataka Tourism’s Home Stay Scheme provides a registration and a ₹5 lakh subsidy for upgrades — the Tourism Department’s office in Mysuru handles applications. FSSAI, trade licence, and homestay registration together take 30–45 days and cost under ₹5,000.

Getting Your First Bookings

List on Airbnb Experiences (for day visits) and Airbnb Stays (for homestay). Both are free to list — commission is 3% on host side. Create a Google Business Profile for your farm. Share the link in Bengaluru-based Facebook groups focused on weekend trips, eco-travel, and parenting. Your first five reviews are the hardest to get — offer early visitors a 20% discount in exchange for an honest review.
