Organic Seed Production — High-Value Farm Income Stream
Seed production is the highest-value use of farm land that most small farmers never consider. When you grow tomatoes for fruit, you earn ₹20–40/kg. When you grow the same tomato plants for seed, the same plant produces seed worth ₹3,000–8,000/kg. The crop area, the growing work, and the input cost are almost identical — what changes is the harvest objective and a few critical production practices. For organic farmers already working with open-pollinated varieties (OPV) and desi seeds, the infrastructure to produce and sell seed is closer than you think.
Why Seed Production Pays So Much More
Seed is not priced by weight — it is priced by germination potential, genetic purity, and the trust that comes with known provenance. A tomato fruit weighs 80–150 grams. The seed inside that fruit, if extracted, dried, and tested at 90%+ germination, weighs 0.5–1.5 grams — and is worth ₹4–8 in retail seed packs. One kg of pure, dry seed represents roughly 600–700 fruits’ worth of genetic material.
The premium price reflects:
- Scarcity (most Indian farmers buy hybrid seeds; OPV/desi seed supply is limited)
- Trust (buyers cannot see inside the packet)
- Organic certification (chemical-free seed commands a premium from organic buyers)
- Genetic value (rare or region-specific varieties can command multiples of the standard price)

Crops Suited for Small-Farm Seed Production
Not every crop is practical for seed production on a small farm. The best options:
Tomato (OPV varieties): High seed value, manageable isolation. Select 10–15 best plants at flowering. Mark them clearly. Allow fruits to fully ripen beyond eating stage (deep red, soft). Extract seed by fermentation method (3 days in water), then wash, dry.
Brinjal: Self-pollinating, lower isolation requirement. Seed from 1 acre can yield 8–12 kg. Price ₹2,000–4,000/kg from seed networks.
Okra (ladies finger): One of the easiest seed crops. Allow 20% of plants to go to seed (do not harvest those pods as vegetables). Pods dry on the plant, harvest before splitting. Yield 100–150 kg/acre; price ₹400–600/kg.
Coriander: Let 30% of your coriander patch bolt and set seed. Harvest when 70% of seeds turn brown. Thresh and dry. Seed price ₹150–300/kg, but yield from even a small plot (10 sqm) is meaningful.
Fenugreek (methi): Allow to pod fully. Thresh. Excellent demand from both organic seed networks and Ayurvedic buyers. Price ₹200–400/kg.
Isolation Distances Required
Cross-pollination from neighbouring conventional crops contaminates your seed’s genetic purity — a catastrophic quality failure.
| Crop | Pollination Type | Isolation Required |
|---|---|---|
| Tomato | Mostly self-pollinating | 50 metres (sufficient for small farms) |
| Brinjal | Self + insect | 200–400 metres |
| Okra | Insect | 400–1,000 metres |
| Coriander | Insect (bee) | 500–1,000 metres |
| Fenugreek | Self-pollinating | 100–200 metres |
If your farm is surrounded by neighbours growing the same species, grow the seed crop in the centre of your plot or negotiate with neighbours not to grow the same crop that season.
Roguing — Removing Off-Types
Roguing is walking through your seed crop at 2–3 critical growth stages and removing any plant that looks different from the variety you are multiplying — different leaf shape, different flower colour, different fruit size or ripening pattern. Off-type plants contaminate seed purity. Rogue before flowering (when off-types are most visible) and again at fruit set. Remove and destroy off-type plants entirely — do not compost them.
Farmer's Tip
Who Buys Your Seed
Navdanya (Vandana Shiva’s seed network): Based in Dehradun, works with Karnataka seed keepers. Purchases certified varieties. Contact their regional representative.
Sahaja Samrudha: Karnataka-based organic seed collective. Active buyer of desi vegetable and grain seeds. Annual seed fair in Bengaluru is a key exchange point.
Direct to organic farmers: WhatsApp organic farming groups are the fastest-growing distribution channel for small seed lots. Farmers in other states buy seed from verified growers they follow online.
PPVFRA registration for named varieties: If you have been maintaining a unique locally-adapted variety for 5+ years, registration under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Act gives you legal recognition and rights to that variety’s commercialisation.
