Power Tiller for Small Farms — Buying and Operating Guide
For farms under 5 acres, a power tiller outperforms a tractor on almost every metric that matters to a small farmer: purchase cost, operating cost, manoeuvrability in narrow rows, and fuel consumption. A 4-wheel tractor requires a minimum 2-acre plot to turn efficiently and costs ₹5–8 lakh before subsidy. A power tiller handles the same land preparation tasks on 1–5 acre plots at a fraction of the cost — and fits through garden beds, orchard rows, and paddy fields where tractors cannot go.
Power Tiller vs Tractor: The Right Choice for Small Farms
A power tiller is a 2-wheel walking tractor: the operator walks behind, steering with two handlebars. This design makes it ideal for terraced land, irregular plots, and fields with permanent beds or bunds. For operations like puddling paddy, bed making, rotavating, and inter-cultivation in vegetable rows, the power tiller is simply more appropriate than a tractor under 5 acres.
The tractor makes sense when you have above 5 acres, when significant transport work is needed (trailer haulage), or when you want to hire out services commercially. Below that threshold, a power tiller combined with a hired tractor for occasional deep tillage is the most economical combination.
Key Specifications
Engine: 8–12 HP single-cylinder air-cooled diesel engine. The 8 HP models suffice for most vegetable and paddy operations. Move to 10–12 HP if you work in heavy clay soil or use a trailer frequently.
Drive system: Most models are 2-wheel drive with differential lock for uneven ground. Choose a model with multiple forward gears (at least 6 forward + 2 reverse) for flexibility across tasks.
Attachments available: rotavator (primary tillage and bed preparation), ridger (raised bed forming), weeder (inter-row cultivation), trailer (2-wheel cart, 500–750 kg capacity). Confirm attachment compatibility before purchase — not all attachments fit all brands.
PTO (Power Take-Off): A live rear PTO enables power-driven attachments like rotavators. Verify the PTO speed matches your planned attachments (typically 540 RPM).

Government Subsidy Under SMAM
The Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM) provides 40–50% subsidy on power tillers for eligible farmers. SC/ST farmers and women farmers receive the higher subsidy band. The subsidy process requires: application through the state agriculture department’s portal, waiting list (varies by state — Karnataka typically 2–6 months), purchase from an empanelled dealer, and inspection before disbursement.
Key point: apply before purchasing — retrospective subsidy claims are not accepted.
Top Brands in India
VST Shakti (Bangalore): most popular in Karnataka and South India, excellent dealer network, 8 HP and 12 HP models. KAMCO (Kerala): strong in paddy states, known for reliability in wet conditions. Kirloskar (Pune): good engine quality, wide service coverage. Greaves (Mumbai): newer entrant with competitive pricing. For Karnataka farmers, VST Shakti’s service network is the practical advantage — spare parts and mechanics are available at taluk level.
Hiring vs Buying
Hiring a power tiller from a village operator or agri-machinery custom hiring centre costs ₹500–800 per hour, including the operator. For 1 acre of land preparation (rotavation + bed making), expect 3–5 hours work, so ₹1,500–4,000 per operation.
If you need land preparation 4–6 times per year across 2 or more acres, purchasing begins to make economic sense within 3–4 years — especially with subsidy. If you farm 1 acre with 2–3 operations per year, hiring is cheaper for the foreseeable future.
Farmer's Tip
Suitable Operations for Organic Farms
Power tillers work particularly well for: puddling paddy fields before transplanting (SRI and organic paddy), raised bed formation for vegetable crops, incorporation of green manure and crop residue, inter-cultivation between rows (with weeder attachment), and light transport of harvested produce or compost with trailer.
For organic systems, minimising tillage passes is good practice — use the power tiller for primary bed preparation and rely on hand weeders and mulch for subsequent operations rather than repeated mechanical tillage.
